Nominator's project description

Professor Liew is a renowned expert in computational mechanics, nanomechanics and nanomaterials, multi-scale modeling, sustainable materials and engineering, and fire safety science and engineering. He made pioneering discoveries of new physical phenomena in several materials including composites, damage mechanics and plasticity. Professor Liew’s seminal research contributed to the fundamental understanding of the fracture behaviour of solids, which is also of major importance for designing engineering structures and components as well as developing novel materials. During his research stay in Germany, he will work, among others, on the development of novel self-healing materials and structures with application in the transport infrastructures.
